As per reports, three unidentified individuals were seen exiting a sewer near 535 Park Avenue at East 61st Street, Manhattan, at approximately 0435 hours (local time) on Wednesday (23 September). The individuals then travelled north on Park Avenue and left the area in two vehicles. The NYPD responded following a 911 call and identified the vehicles as a silver sedan and a four-door vehicle. No arrests have been reported. The NYPD investigation remains ongoing.
New York City’s Department of Environmental Protection confirmed that individuals had been illegally entering the sewer system at the location. The sewer and related infrastructure were inspected and reported to be safe.
• The incident is occurring during the UN General Assembly, when additional security measures are in place across Manhattan and law-enforcement agencies are conducting security checks in areas surrounding UN-related activity.
