As per reports, Morocco’s legislative elections are expected to coincide with heightened security measures along the Fnideq-Ceuta border following warnings of possible renewed mass attempts to enter Ceuta on Wednesday (23 September).
• Moroccan authorities have reinforced the border area with water-cannon trucks, police vehicles, armored vehicles and hundreds of security personnel. Reports estimated that around 3,000 personnel, including military units, have been deployed around Fnideq.
• Physical barriers and fencing have reportedly been reinforced along coastal sections to restrict access toward Ceuta. Morocco has also conducted a large-scale preventive security exercise near the Bab Sebta crossing.
• Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares said on Tuesday (22 September) that Morocco had assured Spain it may prevent a mass crossing on Wednesday (23 September).
