Sanitation workers announce statewide strike across Madhya Pradesh on Wednesday (04 November)

Risk level: Low Country: India

As per reports, sanitation workers across Madhya Pradesh launched an indefinite strike on Wednesday (04 November), disrupting waste collection and routine cleaning operations ahead of Diwali.

• In Bhopal, no door-to-door garbage collection or routine road cleaning has been carried out since Wednesday morning (04 November), leaving waste accumulated across residential neighbourhoods and commercial areas, including New Market. More than 400 waste collection vehicles were reportedly parked at transfer stations, bringing routine waste collection operations to a halt across the city.
• The strike follows demonstrations on Tuesday (03 November), when workers staged a sit-in at Jahangirabad Square, blocking traffic for approximately two hours before moving their protest to Shahjahani Park.
• Workers are demanding regularisation of contractual employment, a minimum monthly salary of INR 25,000, government employee status and other employment benefits.
• Union representatives indicated that the strike would continue if discussions with state government officials failed to produce a favourable decision on Wednesday (04 November). Workers have also warned against resuming sanitation operations during Diwali.
