According to the Ministry of Health and Medical Services (MHMS), a significant and sustained rise in influenza-like illness (ILI) cases was recorded through the national disease surveillance system during the reporting period from 24 August to 13 September 2026.
• Unusual increases were initially identified at surveillance sites in Honiara, Western and Malaita provinces during the previous two reporting weeks.
• During the latest reporting week, surveillance sites in Central, Isabel and Makira provinces also reported increases, while several sites in Honiara recorded a decline in weekly cases.
• Laboratory testing conducted in July and August detected influenza A in a majority of samples tested. Further testing is underway to identify the viruses contributing to the current increase.
• MHMS stated that ILI can be caused by several circulating respiratory viruses, including influenza and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).
• MHMS has urged the public to practise good hygiene and respiratory health measures to reduce transmission.
