As per reports, heavy rainfall due to El Nino poses a threat of landslides, floods, and rising river levels, impacting various regions in Peru, including Lima, as announced on Wednesday (03 January).
• The El Nino is expected to affect 1.5 million people in Peru in 2024, leading to water supply and sanitation challenges.
• Servicio Nacional de Meteorología e Hidrología del Perú (National Service of Meteorology and Hydrology of Peru) warns of increased flow in Rímac, Chillón, and Lurín rivers, signaling potential overflow risks in the coming months.
• In total, 16 regions have been identified at high risk due to El Nino, particularly susceptible to landslides and mass movements, impacting homes, healthcare, and education facilities for large populations. They include Cajamarca, Piura, Huánuco, La Libertad, Áncash, Cusco, Junín, Pasco, Huancavelica, Amazonas, Puno, Arequipa, Ayacucho, and San Martín.
