Railway construction between Hanover and Berlin scheduled to begin on Friday (02 October)

Risk level: Low Country: Germany

As per reports, Deutsche Bahn InfraGO is scheduled to begin extensive construction work along the 227-kilometre railway corridor between Hanover and Berlin on Friday (02 October).

• Major works are scheduled to continue through December 2027.
• Electrification of the Lehrter Stammbahn line is now scheduled for completion only in December 2027. During the construction period, trains are therefore largely unable to use either the high-speed line or the parallel Lehrter Stammbahn line.
• From December 2026, three long-distance trains per direction are scheduled to operate every two hours, alongside additional individual services between Hanover and Berlin, with services diverted via Braunschweig and Magdeburg.
• The diversion is scheduled to maintain hourly long-distance connections to Braunschweig and Magdeburg, with Magdeburg receiving more long-distance stops than usual during the construction period.
• The Hanover-Berlin journey time is expected to increase by approximately 80 minutes. Options for long-distance stops in Stendal and Wolfsburg remain under review, while Wolfsburg is reported to have no InterCity (IC) or InterCity Express (ICE) stops from Friday (02 October) until mid-December.
• Local public transport is scheduled to maintain a basic service during the construction period, with replacement buses planned where trains cannot operate and local services routed as close as possible to closed sections.
• Freight trains are also scheduled to use the Braunschweig-Magdeburg diversion during the corridor renovation, while a second diversion route via Halle-Eichenberg is scheduled to become available by the end of January 2027.
• The Halle-Eichenberg route is currently being modernised and expanded, and Deutsche Bahn InfraGO has postponed the second construction phase originally planned for summer 2027.
