Private bus operators in Jaipur warn of protests over permit tax post-Diwali

Risk level: Low Country: India

As per reports, the Private Bus Operators Association, Stage Carriage, Jaipur, has given the Rajasthan Transport Department three days to clarify allegations of double taxation on 24-hour special permits, warning of protests and a possible strike after Diwali (religious festival) if the issue remains unresolved.

Kailash Chandra Sharma, president of the association, alleged that the department had been collecting double tax for approximately two months despite repeated representations by operators.

• Sharma stated that the association would approach the Transport Commissioner if the department failed to respond within the stipulated three-day period.
• Operators have reportedly decided against launching a strike during Diwali, which is a peak business period for private bus services, but may organise protests or consider a strike after the festival if the dispute remains unresolved.
• The precise protest locations and routes related to the strike have not been announced.
