As per reports, a steel reinforcement cage from an under-construction pier at the Anand Nagar–Saket Elevated Road project site toppled onto a passing car on Kopri Bridge, near Thane’s Mumbai entry point, on Saturday (17 October).

• The incident occurred as the vehicle was navigating the bridge, when the heavy steel rods and reinforcement structure fell onto the car, piercing its body and severely damaging the front windshield.
• The incident caused traffic congestion in the affected area and raised concerns about construction-site safety along a busy urban transport corridor.
• Authorities confirmed that no injuries were reported despite the extensive damage to the vehicle.
• Emergency response teams reached the location, and the damaged vehicle was towed away. The toppled reinforcement cage was subsequently removed from the carriageway using a crane to facilitate the restoration of traffic movement.
• Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has also ordered a detailed investigation to determine the cause of the structural failure and identify individual or systemic lapses in safety procedures. The authority has directed that strict corrective measures be implemented across the project site to prevent similar incidents and reduce risks to motorists.
• MMRDA took action against the contractor responsible for executing the project and imposed a fine of INR two crore, citing serious safety lapses.
