As per reports, thousands of online motorcycle taxi drivers (ojol) are scheduled to hold a demonstration in the area of the DPR Building on Wednesday (17 September). Garda Indonesia Chairman Raden Igun Wicaksono has estimated around 5,000 motorcycle taxi drivers will participate. The are demanding that the case of Affan Kurniawan should be investigated thoroughly and transparently.
The five demands which have been listed are –
• Form a joint, independent fact-finding team to thoroughly investigate the repressive actions that led to the death of Affan Kurniawan. State officials should protect the people, not cause casualties.
• Demanding transparency and accountability from the Republic of Indonesia Police, regarding the chronology of events that caused Affan Kurniawan’s death.
• Punish the perpetrators who negligently or intentionally oppress the victims so that they can be held accountable through a transparent legal process and such similar tragedies do not happen again.
• They have called for national solidarity from all online motorcycle taxi drivers and civil society to monitor this case until it is resolved, in order to uphold justice for the victims.
• Urging the government to ensure protection for all online motorcycle taxi drivers, who work on the streets everyday and are vulnerable to being caught up in mass conflict.
