Multiple arson incidents on Monday (19 August) in Melbourne under investigation; organised crime links suspected

As per reports, Melbourne authorities are investigating multiple arson incidents in the city, believed to be linked to organised crime elements, as of Monday (19 August). Two properties were attacked with in the early hours of Monday (19 August) – a hair salon in Port Melbourne and a house in Thomastown – while two other incidents had occurred on 18 August.

Two children were hospitalised for smoke inhalation from the Port Melbourne incident. At least 29 firefighters were deployed to contain the fire in the Thomastown incident, in which no casualties were reported. Local Police revealed that the Thomastown property that was attacked belongs to a prominent underworld figure. An investigation is underway and further details are awaited.
