As per reports, lead has been detected in the taps of several older, City of Port Alberni-owned facilities on Tuesday (28 January). The testing followed the discovery of elevated lead levels in some taps at schools within the Pacific Rim School District.
• The city conducted water testing at 34 water sources across its facilities, finding that 14 samples exceeded the Health Canada maximum allowable lead concentration of 0.005 milligrams per litre.
• After a three-minute flush, four samples still showed lead levels above the limit. Affected facilities include the Echo Centre, fire hall, Industrial Heritage Centre, and public works building.
• The city is addressing the issue by posting signage or stopping water supply at impacted locations and installing filtration systems.
• The city is conducting further testing and collaborating with stakeholders to ensure all city facilities meet drinking water guidelines.
