As per reports, Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey has proclaimed 15 August as India Day across Massachusetts in recognition of India’s 79th Independence Day and the contributions of the Indian American community to the state.
• Boston Mayor Michelle Wu issued a corresponding proclamation for the City of Boston. The proclamations recognise the role of community organisations in supporting civic engagement, cultural exchange and annual Independence Day activities.
• The Boston proclamation also highlighted the opening of the new Consulate General of India in Boston and the visit of the Indian Naval Ship Sudarshini during Sail Boston 250. The vessel is an Indian Navy sail training ship and was hosted at Boston Fish Pier during the maritime programme.
• The designation is commemorative and does not constitute a statewide public holiday. Government offices, businesses and transport services are therefore expected to follow normal Saturday operating arrangements unless separate local events or restrictions are announced.
