IMD issues yellow warning for coastal Andhra Pradesh from Friday to Monday (25-28 September)

As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Coastal Andhra Pradesh is forecast to receive heavy rainfall on Friday (25 September), along with thunderstorms, lightning and squalls and strong surface winds.

• The IMD has also issued thunderstorms, lightning and squalls, and strong surface winds across Coastal Andhra Pradesh from Saturday (26 September) through Monday (28 September).
• The IMD has also issued yellow warning for Rayalaseema for thunderstorms, lightning and strong surface winds through Monday (28 September).
• Reports indicate that heavy rainfall and strong winds from the early hours of Thursday (24 September) inundated several arterial and sub-arterial roads and low-lying areas. Waterlogging ranging from ankle-deep to waist-deep was reported on Pinnamaneni Polyclinic Road, NTR Circle, Nirmala Convent Road, the road near the railway underbridge at Vijayawada RTC bus station, and parts of I Town and II Town.
• In Vijayawada–Nunna connectivity a section of Nunna–Vikas College Road was washed away after the Peda Vagu overflowed, and a car was swept away, disrupting road connectivity. The Munneru, Kattaleru and Paleru streams also overflowed, while flooding was reported in Tiruvuru, Penuganchiprolu, Nandigama, A Konduru and G Konduru mandals in NTR district.
• Nearly 70 houses in Chinthalapadu village in Tiruvuru Mandal were partially damaged by strong winds and continuous rain. Revenue, panchayat raj, health and electricity departments were directed to coordinate restoration and relief operations.
• At Vijaywada International Airport, IndiGo flight 6E-7128 to Visakhapatnam was cancelled due to heavy rainfall. Separately, 20 gates of the Prakasam Barrage were raised by one foot to release 14,500 cusecs of excess floodwater downstream, while another 11,524 cusecs was released into canals. Authorities issued precautions for areas along the Krishna River upstream and downstream of the barrage.
• In Alluri Sitarama Raju district, a landslide on Chinthalamma Ghat Road in Koyyuru mandal disrupted vehicular traffic. At Onukonda village in Anantagiri mandal near Araku Valley, a swollen stream of the Sarada River brought traffic to a standstill. Three roads covering about half a kilometre were affected, while damage to houses, roads and power infrastructure was reported.
• Nineteen electricity poles were damaged or uprooted in Alluri Sitarama Raju district, disrupting power supply to 37 villages. Authorities restored power in 10 mandals within hours.
• APSRTC temporarily cancelled around 170 bus services in the Visakhapatnam region because of adverse weather. Around 50 services on routes including RK Beach, Scindia and Gajuwaka were cancelled, along with another 120 services, including AC long-distance services to destinations such as Bhadrachalam, Vanka, Delhi and Hyderabad.
• Heavy rainfall and strong winds damaged power infrastructure from Srikakulam to West Godavari. EPDCL reported that 887,757 power services and 1,468 villages were affected. Restoration was underway, with waterlogging delaying some repair work.
• Cargo-handling operations were suspended at Kakinada Deep Water Port and Kakinada Anchorage Port because of heavy rain and turbulent sea conditions. Twelve ships were waiting at the Anchorage Port for rice cargo and four ships were awaiting loads at Kakinada Deep Water Port. Operations were expected to resume by Friday noon, subject to weather conditions.
