IMD issues orange and yellow alert in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry from Friday to Monday (17-20 October)

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued the following weather warnings in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry from Friday to Monday (17-20 October):

• An orange alert has been issued for very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, squalls, and strong surface winds across southern Tamil Nadu districts on Friday (17 October), particularly over Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, Virudhunagar, Thoothukudi, and Kanyakumari. The rest of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry remain under a yellow alert.
• According to the IMD nowcast issued at 0100 hours (valid till 0400 hours), moderate thunderstorms (surface wind <40 km/h) and rainfall between 5–15 mm/h have been forecast for Chennai, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Tiruvallur, Ranipet, Vellore, Tirupattur, Tiruvannamalai, Dharmapuri, and Krishnagiri. Additionally, A yellow alert for light rainfall and thunderstorms remains active for Puducherry, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Ariyalur, Pudukottai, Nagapattinam, Karaikal, Thanjavur, and Thiruvarur.
• From Saturday to Monday (18–20 October), a yellow alert continues for the region with scattered rain and isolated thunderstorms expected across southern and coastal districts, including Madurai, Sivaganga, Ramanathapuram, Tiruchirappalli, Nagapattinam, and Karaikal, accompanied by winds of 30–40 km/h.
