As per reports, preparations are underway along Mexico’s Pacific coast as Hurricane ‘Polo’ remains stationary offshore and is expected to move slowly along the coast on Thursday (24 September).
• Reports indicate that ‘Polo’ reached Category 05 after forming on Monday (21 September), with sustained wind speeds of 285 kilometres per hour and stronger gusts.
• The hurricane was approximately 345 kilometres south of Zihuatanejo on Tuesday (22 September) and around 300 kilometres from the Mexican coast.
• The Mexican weather service expects the hurricane to make its closest approach to the coast off Michoacán on Thursday (24 September), at a distance of nearly 200 kilometres.
• Heavy rainfall may affect Michoacán, Jalisco and Colima, with rainfall potentially triggering flooding and landslides.
• Authorities have closed some ports, including Acapulco, while schools have partially closed in coastal areas. Red flags at beaches indicate a swimming ban.
• Mexican authorities have indicated that the hurricane may not make direct landfall. However, rainfall associated with the system may affect coastal and inland areas of Michoacán, Jalisco and Colima.
