As per reports, on Thursday (30 October), the San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH) confirmed that elevated levels of radioactive plutonium-239 (Pu-239) were detected in the air at Hunters Point Naval Shipyard (Parcel C).
Reports indicate that the contamination reportedly occurred in November 2024, but city officials were only notified by the US Navy in October 2025.
• The Navy has since agreed to meet with city officials on Friday (31 October) to discuss the contamination data and communication failures.
• SFDPH has requested detailed information by 07 November on the extent, duration, and location of the Pu-239 exceedance. The Navy’s Base Realignment and Closure Program Management Office West, directed by Anthony Megliola, stated that further clarification is expected to be provided following the scheduled meeting.
