Heavy rainfall and landslides reported in Darjeeling on Sunday (05 October); seven dead

As per reports, seven people have died after heavy rainfall triggered multiple landslides in West Bengal’s Darjeeling district on Sunday (05 October).

• District officials reported that villages such as Bishnulal Gaon, Ward 3 Lake Side, and Jasbir Gaon are among the worst affected.
• The Dhudia bridge, an iron bridge over the Balason River at Dudhia, connecting Siliguri and Mirik, has been damaged and collapsed due to the heavy rainfall in the region.
• National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has deployed its three teams from Darjeeling, Siliguri and Alipurduar areas at the disaster-hit Mirik area in Darjeeling subdivision of West Bengal. Two more teams- one each from Malda and Kolkata- are being moved. The NDRF teams are engaged in rescue operations.
• Moreover, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for very heavy rainfall in Darjeeling on Sunday (05 October).
