As per reports, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced plans to strengthen security measures across Palermo, Sicily, following an extraordinary meeting of the Provincial Committee for Public Order and Security on Monday (13 July).

• Prime Minister Meloni announced that the Ministry of the Interior has assigned 90 additional police officers to Palermo, supplementing the 850 officers deployed to the area since 2025. The Ministry has also identified additional resources to support the recruitment of local police personnel for extraordinary patrol activities.
• The government announced an additional EUR six million in funding for Palermo and municipalities within the metropolitan area, in addition to the EUR nine million already allocated. The funding is intended to support urban security initiatives, strengthen local police presence and expand law enforcement capabilities.
• Authorities also announced that video surveillance systems are scheduled to be deployed in the city’s highest-risk neighbourhoods. The cameras are expected to be managed directly by the Flying Squad (Squadra Mobile) to support crime prevention and criminal investigations.
• Prime Minister Meloni stated that authorities are seeking operational solutions to launch an extraordinary security operation focused on monitoring and securing Palermo, particularly in high-risk neighbourhoods, including ZEN (Zona Espansione Nord).
• She also indicated that the government is considering the deployment of the Italian Army alongside police forces in joint security operations and, if necessary, amendments to the ‘Safe Roads’ (Strade Sicure) framework to facilitate such deployments.
