The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued the following forecast and nowcast warnings across parts of Tamil Nadu on Friday (31 July), as per the latest updates issued on Thursday (30 July).
• Forecast: A yellow alert for thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and squalls has been issued for Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Ranipet, Tirupathur, Vellore, Tiruvannamalai, Viluppuram, Kallakurichi, Cuddalore, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Tiruchirappalli, Karur, Namakkal, Salem, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Erode, Tiruppur, Dindigul, Madurai, Theni, Sivagangai, Ramanathapuram, Virudhunagar, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Kanyakumari, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Pudukkottai. A yellow alert for heavy rainfall, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and squalls has been issued for Nilgiris and Coimbatore on Friday (31 July).
• Nowcast: A yellow alert for light rainfall measuring less than five millimetres per hour, light thunderstorms with maximum surface wind speeds below 40 kilometres per hour, and moderate rainfall measuring five to 15 millimetres per hour has been issued for Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Theni, Tenkasi, Kanyakumari and Tirunelveli. The alert is valid until 0400 hours (local time) on Friday (31 July).
