The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported a 5.8 magnitude earthquake in the Kermadec Islands region at 0508 hours (local time). The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres, with its epicentre located in the remote southwest Pacific Ocean.
