Client
Colocation and hyperscale operator · campuses in Northern Virginia, Texas, Georgia
The Event
At 07:56 ET a 230 kV line in Dominion’s Northern Virginia zone faulted. In two waves, ~3,870 MW of data centre load came off the PJM grid — the largest such event in PJM history. No utility breaker opened: the facilities’ own protection systems took them off-grid. No customer lost service, and it still drew a federal regulatory proceeding.
What the Client Was Facing
- The sites islanded themselves. A protection-settings problem sitting with the operator, not the utility.
- A whole cluster started generators at once. Run-hours against air-permit limits; fuel contracts sized for single-site events.
- Fault or attack? A simultaneous multi-site disconnect across one metro looks identical to a coordinated attack.
How Datasurfr Helped
- Monitor Grid-operator and regulatory sources in the same feed as physical security and weather over the campus cluster.
- Assess Campuses, substation feeds, fuel depots and on-call engineers mapped; proximity alerts resolved the footprint in minutes.
- Decide Scenario sets against five years of regional grid data set generator run-time and fuel-reorder thresholds.
- Act Customer assurance issued within the hour; engineering accountability reconciled without a phone tree.
Impact
- Fault correctly identified in under ten minutes — eliminating costly defensive actions
- Customer assurance issued ahead of press, preventing demand-side speculation
- Regulator told the true sequence before rumor did — preventing emergency mandates
“The hardest call of the morning was fault or attack. Getting it right in minutes determined everything that followed, including what the operator did not do.”
