Tourist boat catches fire on Mahakam River in Samarinda on Saturday (17 January)

As per reports, a tourist boat identified as KM Teman Bejalan caught fire while sailing on the Mahakam River in Samarinda City, East Kalimantan, at about 1821 hours (local time) on Saturday (17 January).

• The vessel was carrying 68 passengers and reportedly caught fire while approaching Mahakam Ilir Pier to dock.
• Evacuation was conducted by pier staff, local residents, and crews of passing vessels, with passengers reportedly transferred to land using supporting boats, including klotok boats and longboats.
• No casualties have been reported as of this update, and all passengers have reportedly been evacuated safely. Preliminary assessment by Samarinda Police has indicated the fire likely originated in the engine area at the rear of the vessel, with the generator reportedly suspected as the cause.
