The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported a magnitude 4.9 earthquake approximately 399 kilometers south-southeast of Balut Island, Municipality of Sarangani, Davao Occidental, at around 0200 hours (local time) on Thursday (15 January).

The earthquake originated at an estimated depth of 71 kilometers and was classified as a tectonic event.
