The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) recorded a 3.4 magnitude earthquake at approximately 2301 hours (local time) of Friday (09 January) in the Eastern part of Shimane Prefecture. The earthquake epicenter was at a depth of 20 kilometres (km).

Seismic intensity-2 was witnessed in Nanbu and Nichinan towns of Tottori Prefecture. Seismic intensity-1 was witnessed in various other towns of Shimane Prefecture, Tottori Prefecture, and in Shobara City in Hiroshima Prefecture.
