The United States Geological Service (USGS) reported a 4.9 magnitude earthquake, 119 kilometres (km) north-northwest of Finschhafen, Morobe Province, Papua New Guinea at approximately 1954 hours (local time) on Tuesday (23 December).

The earthquake was reported at a depth of 196.7 km with no major seismic intensity observed.
