As per reports, the US Department of Justice (DOJ) filed a lawsuit on Thursday (13 November) in a California federal court to block the state’s new congressional map approved under Proposition 50 on Tuesday (04 November). The DOJ joined a similar case filed earlier by the California Republican Party, alleging that the map constitutes racial gerrymandering by favoring Hispanic voters and Democratic candidates.

The lawsuit challenges the plan backed by Governor Gavin Newsom, introduced in response to a Republican-led redistricting effort in Texas supported by President Trump. The DOJ seeks a court order to prevent the use of the new map in future elections.
