Update on Super Typhoon Ragasa – Wednesday (24 September)

As per reports, the following updates are reported on Typhoon Ragasa as of Wednesday (24 September) :

• The Hong Kong Observatory has reported that Super Typhoon Ragasa is currently skirting approximately 100 kilometres south of Hong Kong.
• At 0800 hours (local time), the storm’s centre was located about 120 kilometres south-southwest of the city, moving west to west-northwest at around 22 km/h.
• The Hurricane Signal, No. 10, is in force, indicating mean wind speeds of 118 km/h or more. Maximum sustained winds of 148 km/h at Ngong Ping, 134 km/h at Waglan Island, and 134 km/h at Tate’s Cairn have been recorded, with gusts exceeding 206 km/h in exposed areas.
• The storm’s circulation is extensive, and destructive hurricane-force winds are expected to continue affecting the southern parts of Hong Kong. Local winds are shifting gradually from easterlies to southeasterlies, exposing previously sheltered areas.
• The weather will likely remain persistently adverse with frequent heavy squally showers and thunderstorms. Seas are described as phenomenal with swells and overtopping waves expected along eastern and southern coasts.
• Storm surge is anticipated to raise water levels by 2–3 metres along coastal Hong Kong today, peaking around noon. Levels may reach 3.5–4 metres above chart datum generally, and 4–5 metres above chart datum at Tolo Harbour.
• The Hong Kong Observatory has also issued the Amber Rainstorm Warning Signal, in force since 0245 hours (local time), signalling more than 30 mm of rainfall in an hour is expected or occurring.
• Additionally, a Special Announcement on Flooding in Northern New Territories was issued at 0535 hours (local time), highlighting that over 100 mm of rainfall was recorded in Pat Heung and Kam Tin in the past four hours, with warnings of flash floods.
