Protestors and Police Authorities Clash During Anti-Government Protests

Locations Affected: Kenya

On 25 June, thousands of protestors took to the streets across Kenya to mark the first anniversary of the anti-government demonstrations. The youth-led protests were reported in the capital, Nairobi, as well as in Mombasa and other towns such as Kitengela, Kisii, Matuu, and Nyeri. Police used tear gas, water cannons, and live rounds to disperse protestors in Nairobi, while demonstrators responded by throwing stones and other objects. The head of Amnesty Kenya, a non-profit organization based in Nairobi, stated that clashes between the police and protestors resulted in 16 fatalities and at least 400 injuries.

Anti-Government Protests in 2024 and Persisting Discontent

Why: In June 2024, anti-government protests erupted in Kenya in response to a controversial finance bill that aimed to raise taxes. More than 60 people were killed during the protests, with police using tear gas and water cannons to disperse crowds. Following the unrest, President William Ruto withdrew the proposed bill. A year later, discontent persists among the youth over issues such as corruption, unemployment, the rising cost of living, and repeated allegations of police brutality, including the death of a teacher in police custody and the shooting of an unarmed street vendor.

Impact of the Protests

  • Roads leading to the Kenyan Parliament building and the President’s office in Nairobi were barricaded ahead of the demonstrations. Large crowds were seen marching toward State House and the President’s official residence. The business district in Nairobi remained closed during the protests.
  • The Communications Authority of Kenya ordered all television and radio stations to halt live coverage of the protests, citing violations of Kenyan law. However, a court in Nairobi later suspended the order, allowing broadcasts to resume.
  • Protestors in Nairobi lit street fires and chanted slogans against President Ruto. Isolated clashes and multiple arrests were reported in Mombasa, while demonstrators in Kikuyu town, Kiambu County, set fire to court buildings.

Outlook on the Situation

The recent protests in Kenya are reminiscent of last year’s protests and highlight the growing discontent in the country, especially among the youth. The volatile nature of the protests increases concerns regarding further violence and clashes. Further demonstrations and heightened security can be anticipated. Authorities are likely to maintain roadblocks near government buildings and protest sites. Regulations restricting movements, like curfews and traffic diversions, could also be imposed. Organizations are advised to remain situationally aware and avoid high-risk areas.
