Locations Affected: Mexico
Mexico’s southern Pacific Coast has begun clean-up operations after Hurricane Erick made a landfall on 19 June as a Category 3 storm about 20 miles east of Punta Maldonado bringing gusty winds and heavy rainfall. The tropical storm rapidly strengthened into a Category 3 hurricane (maximum sustained winds between 112 and 130 mph) on 18 June, and later into a Category 4 hurricane (130 to 156 mph) early on 19 June. Erick became the first hurricane to make landfall in Mexico during the current hurricane season, which extends from May to November. Forecasters have predicted an above-average hurricane season, with between eight and 11 hurricanes expected of which four to six may reach major hurricane status.

Impact of the Storm
- A hurricane warning was in effect from Acapulco to Puerto Ángel, indicating potential hurricane conditions and urging completion of preparations to protect life and property.
- On 18 June, the hurricane caused flooding in Salina Cruz, a major seaport in Oaxaca.
- The storm led to power and communication disruptions, infrastructure damage and flooded streets in the tourist town of Puerto Escondido in Oaxaca. No deaths or injuries have been reported as of 19 June.
- The storm dropped to Category 1 (winds of 75-95 mph) after making landfall. However, the NHC has warned of flooding and hurricane-force winds as Erick moved towards the north.
- Guerrero is forecast to receive up to eight inches of rain and Oaxaca and Michoacan could receive up to four inches.
Weather Forecast and Potential Disruptions
The hurricane is forecast to continue deteriorating as it moves through Mexico’s mountains and dissipate by 20 June. Heavy rainfall due to the storm is expected to persist and could trigger flash flooding and mudslides. Disruptions to essential services may occur due to potential damage to utility infrastructure. Travel disruptions are likely to persist, including flight delays, cancellations, and road blockages. Organizations are advised to remain abreast of developments and prepare necessary contingency plans.
