As per reports, on Saturday (24 May), an unauthorized demonstration in support of Palestine escalated into violent clashes in Bern, with approximately 2,000 demonstrators engaging in confrontations with law enforcement.
• Violence erupted at multiple locations, including Bubenbergplatz, where police were forced to retreat in the face of a large and hostile crowd. Six police officers were injured during the unrest, reportedly due to fireworks, stones, and wooden projectiles hurled by demonstrators.
• Law enforcement responded with rubber bullets, irritants, water cannons, and batons to contain the crowd and prevent further escalation.
• Despite the disruption at Bubenbergplatz, law enforcement succeeded in containing the demonstration at other strategic locations, including Casinoplatz and Kapellenstrasse, thereby preventing the group from reaching sensitive embassy and synagogue zones.
• The level of violence was considered unusually high by officials. Fireworks stolen from a shop on Monbijoustrasse were launched at police, alongside stones and firecrackers. Extensive property damage was reported, including defaced buildings and cracked windows at the UBS branch near the train station.
