As per reports, a cold front is impacting the southeast region of Brazil, causing heavy rainfall and gusty winds starting Thursday (21 November). The combination of the cold front, a digging system, and a humidity corridor from Northern Brazil is intensifying rainfall formation in areas like Rio de Janeiro and Espírito Santo.
• The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) has issued an intense rainfall alert until 1000 hours (local time) on Thursday (21 November), forecasting rainfall of 20 to 30 millimetres per hour, potentially reaching up to 50 millimetres in one day.
• The rainfall alert affects the entire state of Rio de Janeiro, southern Espírito Santo, and parts of northern and southern Minas Gerais, with risks of flooding, tree falls, and power outages.
• Along with heavy rainfall, wind gusts of 40 to 60 kilometers per hour are expected, increasing the risks of infrastructure damage.
• The North region is also forecast to experience light rainfall, while the Northeast is forecast to remain hot and dry with some isolated rainfall. The South and Midwest regions are also forecast tol see smaller volumes of rainfall, with weather stabilising by Saturday (23 November).
