According to reports, a 48-hour bandh has been called in Manipur by the Joint Action Committee in protest against the brutal killing of Takhellambam Manoranjan Singh by militants in Kangchup, Imphal West district. The bandh is scheduled to conclude at 0500 hours on Monday (22 January).
• The JAC initiated the bandh due to the state government’s failure to meet the demands presented to the Chief Minister on 18 January.
• The JAC’s demands include appointing the Chief Minister as the chairman of the Unified Command, the Central Government scrapping the Suspension of Operation (SoO) pact with “Kuki militants,” putting an end to the “divide and rule policy” in Manipur and immediate implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC).
• Additionally, the Chief Minister is urged to resign if the State Government cannot effectively address militant attacks, and the JAC calls for the removal of “ineffective” Central security forces from the state, granting additional power to the State security forces.
