EKRE party scheduled to hold a picket in Tallinn on Wednesday (02 September)

Risk level: Low Country: Estonia

As per reports, before the extraordinary session of the Riigikogu, the Conservative People’s Party of Estonia (EKRE) is reported to hold a picket outside the parliament building in Tallinn at 1100 hours local time (0800 hours UTC), demanding the introduction of direct presidential elections on Wednesday (02 September).

• Estonia’s current presidential election system does not conduct elections. The party believes that the head of state is effectively determined by agreements between party leaders, and this decision is then formalized by a vote in the Riigikogu.
• According to EKRE, a president elected in this manner inevitably becomes politically dependent and lacks the people’s trust.
• The EKRE is expewcted to not participate in the Riigikogu session on Wednesday (02 September), where parliament is expected to begin the presidential election.
