As per reports, a chlorine gas leak occurred in the early morning hours of Monday (24 August) from a 900-kg chlorine cylinder at a water treatment plant operated by the Godhani Gram Panchayat in Godhani village, near Fago Patil Layout and Nag Mandir Tekdi, Nagpur.

• The leak spread to nearby residential areas, with residents and plant workers reporting coughing, breathing difficulties and other symptoms of chlorine exposure. Reports indicate that at least 40 to 50 people were hospitalised. Around 10-12 patients have reportedly been discharged, with those hospitalised reported to be stable.
• Police evacuated residents within a 200-metre radius of the affected facility and cordoned off the area as a precautionary measure.The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), Nagpur Police, fire brigade, Orange City Water (OCW) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) were involved in evacuation, containment and neutralisation operations.
• The leak was reportedly plugged at approximately 0530 hours (local time), after which the affected cylinder was placed in a tank containing water mixed with caustic soda to neutralise the remaining chlorine. Preliminary information indicates that the chlorine cylinder had been stored at the facility for around six months and may have developed a leak in its wall. The exact cause remains under police enquiry.
