The Department of Meteorology of Sri Lanka issued a weather forecast at 0530 hours (local time) on Sunday (23 August) for weather conditions expected during Sunday (23 August), with the following details:

• Several spells of showers will occur in Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Galle and Matara districts, while a few showers may occur in North-western Province.
• Showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in Ampara, Monaragala and Batticaloa districts after 1400 hours (local time).Mainly dry weather will prevail across other areas of the island.
• Fairly strong winds of approximately 30-40 kilometres per hour can be expected at times over the western slopes of the Central Hills, Northern, North-central, Central and North-western provinces, and Trincomalee and Hambantota districts.
