According to the Meteorological, Climatological, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) a magnitude 5.5 earthquake occurred at a distance of 81 kilometres northeast of Ruteng Town in Manggarai Regency of East Nusa Tenggara Province on Monday (17 August).

The earthquake was reported at approximately 1744 hours (local time) at a depth of 10 kilometres. Authorities confirmed that the seismic event does not carry tsunami potential.
