Road snowfall warnings issued for multiple highways across New Zealand from Tuesday (04 August) to Wednesday (05 August)

The Meteorological Service of New Zealand (MetService) has issued road snowfall warnings for several highways across New Zealand from Tuesday (04 August) to Wednesday (05 August).

• Desert Road, State Highway 1: Snow showers are forecast from 1600 hours (local time) on Tuesday (04 August) to 0900 hours (local time) on Wednesday (05 August). Flurries may occur from around dawn on Tuesday, although snow is not expected to settle initially. From late Tuesday afternoon, accumulations of 1 to 2 centimetres are possible above 800 metres, with around 1 centimetre possible down to 500 metres.
• Remutaka Hill Road, State Highway 2: Snow showers are forecast from 0400 hours (local time) on Tuesday (04 August) to 0200 hours (local time) on Wednesday (05 August). Accumulations of 3 to 6 centimetres are possible near the summit, with lower amounts down to 300 metres.
• Lewis Pass, State Highway 7: Snow showers are forecast from 1000 hours (local time) on Tuesday (04 August) to 0600 hours (local time) on Wednesday (05 August). Brief snow may occur before dawn on Tuesday, although little or no accumulation is expected initially. From late Tuesday morning, 4 to 7 centimetres may accumulate east of the Lewis Pass summit, with up to 2 centimetres near the summit and lower amounts farther west.
• Porters Pass, State Highway 73: Snow showers are forecast from 1300 hours (local time) on Tuesday (04 August) to 0200 hours (local time) on Wednesday (05 August). Brief snow may occur before dawn on Tuesday, although little or no accumulation is anticipated initially. From Tuesday afternoon, up to 1 centimetre may settle on the road near and east of the Porters Pass summit.
• Dunedin to Waitati Highway, State Highway 1: Snow showers are forecast until 1200 hours (local time) on Tuesday (04 August), with snow lowering to sea level. Accumulations of 2 to 4 centimetres, with higher amounts possible, are forecast above 200 metres, with lower amounts at lower elevations.
