EU warns of elevated wildfire risk across Greece, Italy, and Central Europe on Wednesday (29 July)

As per reports, the European Union’s Emergency Response Coordination Centre (ERCC) warned on Wednesday (29 July) that the wildfire threat is shifting eastwards, with Greece, Italy, and parts of Central Europe expected to face elevated wildfire risk in the coming weeks.

• Authorities stated that ongoing heatwave conditions, dry weather, strong winds, and limited rainfall are expected to increase wildfire risk across the affected regions.
• France is expected to face challenging wildfire conditions over the next few days, while active wildfires continue in parts of France and Spain.
• Greece is expected to experience elevated wildfire risk in the coming days, while Italy is forecast to face heightened wildfire conditions at the beginning of August.
• The ERCC has deployed seven firefighting aircraft and four helicopters to France, along with six firefighting aircraft and three ground forest firefighting teams to Spain to support ongoing response operations.
• Additional firefighting resources have been pre-positioned across eastern and Central Europe in anticipation of increased wildfire activity.
