Local council elections cancelled in parts of Busia as of Wednesday (29 July)

As per reports, the Electoral Commission cancelled Local Council I (LC I) elections in Solo B Village, Buwumba Village and Buhamuna Village, Busia District, as of Wednesday (29 July) following incidents of violence and disruption at polling stations.

• Reports indicate violence occurred after some voters allegedly prevented election officials from verifying voters using the official register.
• Reports indicate that the unrest reportedly resulted in damage to election materials and assaults on election officials and candidates.
• Reports indicate election officials cancelled polling in Solo B Village, Buwumba Village and Buhamuna Village following guidance from the Electoral Commission.
• Authorities stated fresh elections will be organised at a later date.
• Reports indicate police have registered assault cases linked to the incidents, while the Electoral Commission continues assessing the security situation in the affected villages.
