Situational update on fire reported at Placa de Sants metro construction works in Barcelona, Catalonia as of Thursday (23 July)

As per reports, a gas leak followed by a deflagration and fire was reported at the metro line L5 accessibility construction works at Plaça de Sants, Barcelona, on Wednesday (22 July).

• At approximately 1440 hours local time (1240 hours UTC) on Wednesday (22 July), a gas leak was reported at the L5 metro accessibility construction works at Plaça de Sants. The leak occurred when a gas pipeline was damaged during the course of the works.
• At approximately 2250 hours local time (2050 hours UTC), a deflagration occurred at the site, reportedly during repair works on the damaged gas pipeline. This ignited a fire which affected at least eight persons.
• Nine fire brigade units were deployed to the scene. Municipal authorities confirm that security protocols were activated from the moment of the initial gas leak, and gas supply company personnel were also dispatched to the site.
• As a precautionary measure, traffic in the surrounding area was cut off and the zone was secured. The Guàrdia Urbana de Barcelona established a security perimeter around the incident site.
• As of 0000 hours local time (2200 hours UTC) on Thursday (23 July), emergency services continued to work at the site to extinguish the fire. The cause of the gas leak and its direct relationship to the subsequent fire remained under investigation.
