As per reports, President Bola Tinubu has signed the Presidential Executive Order on Virtual Assets Coordination, 2026, which took immediate effect on Friday (17 July) to regulate Nigeria’s virtual assets sector.
• Reports indicate the order establishes a Virtual Asset Council, chaired by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), to coordinate policy and combat financial risks such as money laundering, fraud, and terrorism financing.
• Reports suggest the council includes the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS), the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU), and the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA).
• Reports further indicate a Virtual Asset Office has been established at the CBN to serve as an operational secretariat and manage an integrated supervisory technology platform for inter-agency data sharing.
