Situational update on wildfire activity continues nationwide amid elevated fire risk in Canada as of Friday (17 July)

As per reports, the Canadian Wildland Fire Information System (CWFIS) stated that 893 wildfires remain active across Canada as of Friday (17 July), while 2,748 wildfires have been extinguished, bringing the total number of reported wildfires nationwide to 3,641 since the beginning of 2026.

• Authorities stated that approximately 2,773,872 hectares of land have been affected by wildfires across Canada this year, with ongoing wildfire activity reported in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, Newfoundland and Labrador, Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Parks Canada-administered areas.
• Authorities further stated that 26 new wildfires were reported across Canada on Friday (17 July), with ongoing wildfire activity affecting parts of British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Newfoundland and Labrador.
• Reports indicate that major active wildfires include incidents near the Unorganized Thunder Bay District, Ontario, covering approximately 318,813 hectares, and the North Slave Region, Northwest Territories, where active wildfires have affected more than 244,000 hectares collectively.
• Authorities stated that wildfire monitoring and response efforts remain ongoing nationwide, with fire management agencies utilizing satellite detection systems, weather monitoring, and ground-based resources to track and respond to wildfire incidents.
