As per reports, the Municipality of Rio de Janeiro has launched the pilot phase of the “Rio Rotativo Digital” electronic public parking system on Friday (17 July).

• Managed by the Municipal Secretariat of Transport alongside CET-Rio, the initial phase replaces traditional paper parking books across seven designated zones around Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas in the South Zone.
• This phase introduces 667 digital parking spots situated along Avenida Borges de Medeiros and Avenida Epitácio Pessoa, incorporating specialized spaces allocated for elderly individuals, motorists with disabilities, and motorcycles. The digital framework operates daily from 0700 hours local time (1000 hours UTC) to 2300 hours local time (0200 hours UTC next day).
• Reports indicate that motorists are required to manage parking activation exclusively through the Jaé mobile application, utilizing a common digital balance funded via credit cards or Pix electronic transfers.
• The standard tariff is fixed at BRL 2 for a duration of two hours, with a maximum permissible extension of up to six hours for a cumulative fee of BRL 6, after which a mandatory one-hour vacancy interval is enforced.
• Failure to activate the application immediately upon occupying a spot allows a maximum grace period of eight hours for electronic regularisation, subject to a 100 percent surcharge raising the fee to BRL 4.
• Non-compliance beyond this eight-hour window is expected to result in official traffic penalties and potential vehicle impoundment. While automated license plate recognition cameras and certified operators manage tracking, the municipal authorities are scheduled to expand the digital system gradually to encompass approximately 37,000 spaces citywide.
