As per reports, the Military Police of the State of Rio de Janeiro (PMERJ) has conducted a high-stakes tactical operation in the Manguinhos community, located in the North Zone (Zona Norte) of Rio, at approximately 0900 hours local time (1200 hours UTC) on Monday (15 June).
• The specialized security raid was executed by assault teams from BOPE (Special Police Operations Battalion) and the CPP (Proximity Police Command).
• According to the Military Police, the structural objective of the operation was to locate and apprehend targeted members of criminal groups heavily involved in vehicle thefts, cargo hijackings, armed robberies, and drug trafficking within the region.
• Security forces encountered immediate armed resistance when a group of gunmen attacked the advancing police teams, triggering a violent exchange of fire.
• During the armed confrontation, a prominent suspect identified as 40-year-old Mauro Ribeiro de Almeida Júnior, alias “Maurinho Macaé”, was shot and succumbed to his injuries.
• Five other suspects were successfully arrested by operational units during the sweeps.
• The affected areas include the Manguinhos community sector, complex residential pathways, and peripheral approach routes off Avenida Dom Hélder Câmara and the Linha Amarela expressway corridors in Zona Norte.
