The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) issued a Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) alert for Gilgit‑Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), as temperatures continue to rise significantly. The alert will remain in effect through Sunday (31 May).
• The increase in temperature is expected to substantially accelerate ice and snowmelt across snow‑covered and glaciated regions, heightening the vulnerability of glacial lakes to sudden outburst incidents.
• Areas identified as particularly at risk include glacier‑fed valleys in Hunza, Nagar, Ghizer, Shigar, Skardu, Ghanche, Gilgit, Astore and Kharmang, along with snow‑fed regions of Swat, Chitral, Diamer, Mansehra, Kohistan and Dir.
• Disaster management authorities have been directed to remain on 24/7 alert, intensify monitoring of glacial and riverine systems, and disseminate warnings through SMS and social media platforms to reduce the risk of casualties and infrastructure damage.
• Residents and travellers in vulnerable mountainous areas have been urged to remain vigilant and follow safety advisories to prevent any untoward incidents.
