As per reports, the Jamaica Urban Transit Company has announced immediate structural changes to its Rural Express Service operations. Effective Friday (29 May), the public passenger bus company has transitioned its Route 520Ex service, which connects the Half-Way-Tree Transport Centre in Kingston to Negril, from a six-day operational model to a restricted weekend-only schedule.
• Under the new administrative mandate, transit operations along this route are projected to run exclusively from Fridays through Mondays, while maintaining all existing morning and evening departure times.
• Reports indicate that this modification follows recent service downscaling by the public transit authority, including frequency reductions implemented on its Ocho Rios services across Routes 610, 611, and 612 on 20 May.
• State representatives indicated that these persistent cutbacks represent an official administrative concession to private Public Passenger Vehicle operators, who had raised serious displacement and livelihood concerns regarding state-subsidized competition.
