Update on election measures ahead of Tamil Nadu state elections as on Wednesday (22 April)

As per reports, approximately 147,000 personnel have been deployed to ensure security for the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections scheduled on Thursday (23 April). A total of 75,032 polling booths have been established across the state, of which 5,938 booths at 3,022 locations have been classified as sensitive.

Enhanced security measures, including the deployment of armed paramilitary forces and the Tamil Nadu Special Police, have been implemented at these sensitive locations. In addition, personnel from the police, paramilitary forces, fire services, forest and prison departments, along with retired army personnel and village guards, have also been mobilized to maintain law and order and ensure the smooth conduct of polling.

• Approximately 23,000 paramilitary personnel from 295 companies have been deployed to support election security operations. This includes 26,203 police inspectors, assistant inspectors, and special assistant inspectors, along with 94,598 head constables and constables. An additional 12,150 personnel from the Special Task Force will also be engaged in maintaining security.
• Excluding Chennai, Avadi, and Tambaram, around 117,000 police personnel will be deployed across 38 districts and seven metropolitan police jurisdictions.
• On polling day, Special Task Force units will conduct statewide patrols using 514 vehicles to ensure a rapid response to any incidents. Additionally, around 1,100 vehicles under the Rapid Action Force and senior police leadership, including Deputy Superintendents, Superintendents of Police, DIGs, IGs, and City Police Commissioners, will be deployed to oversee law and order.
• In 118 constituencies identified for high cash movement, further security reinforcements have also been implemented.
