Update on Severe Tropical Cyclone Maila (37U) – Tuesday (07 April)

As per the Australian Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) update issued at 1600 hours (local time) on Tuesday (07 April), Severe Tropical Cyclone Maila is positioned over the Solomon Sea as a Category 4 system, with sustained winds of approximately 165 km/h and gusts up to 230 km/h.

• The system is located near 9.9 degree South, 156.4 degree East, around 395 km west of Honiara and 1020 km east of Port Moresby. The cyclone is moving slowly and is forecast to track west-southwest from Wednesday (08 April).
• Forecast guidance indicates the system is expected to maintain Category 4 intensity over the next 24–48 hours before weakening to Category 3 by Friday (10 April).
• The system is forecast to move towards the Far North Queensland coast later in the week, with a possible approach towards Cape York Peninsula during the weekend or early next week.
