As per reports, police from the cybercrime division of Punjab Police dismantled an inter-state cyber fraud racket operating from Mohali on Tuesday (10 March). Authorities arrested three suspects who were allegedly running an online extortion operation by impersonating women on social media platforms.
• During the operation, police recovered cash, 29 mobile phones, a laptop, a tablet device, a dongle, and 38 empty mobile phone boxes. Investigators stated that the suspects created fake accounts on social media platforms such as Instagram and WhatsApp to contact potential victims while posing as women.
• Once communication was established, the suspects allegedly threatened victims with the circulation of Artificial Intelligence (AI)-generated objectionable videos on social media in order to extort money.
