Description:
As per reports, a tropical depression is forecast to strengthen into a storm on Wednesday (11 June). The system was located about 360 km east-southeast of the Hoang Sa (Paracel) Islands with maximum sustained winds of 61 kmph and gusts reaching 75-88 kmph as of Tuesday (10 June) afternoon. By 1300 hours on Thursday (12 June), it is expected to intensify further, maintaining direction while accelerating to around 10 kmph.
• On Wednesday (11 June), the south-central area may receive 30–80 mm of rainfall, with localized totals exceeding 150 mm. From Wednesday (11 June) night through Friday (13 June), provinces from Quang Binh to Quang Ngai could see 100–300 mm of rain, with some areas surpassing 450 mm. The northern Central Highlands may receive 70–150 mm, with higher totals in some locations.
• There is also a potential for extreme rainfall events with over 200 mm falling withi just six hours. Additionally, the depression is generating strong winds over the northern East Sea, including the waters surrounding the Hoang Sa archipelago and northern central East Sea. Offshore areas from Quang Tri to Quang Ngai and the Gulf of Tonkin may experience winds of up to 74 kmph, gusts of 89–102 kmph, and wave heights of three to five meters.
• Ministry of Agriculture and Environment issued an urgent directive to localities in the central, Central Highlands, and southern regions. Authorities have been instructed to prepare for possible flash floods and landslides, inspect vulnerable areas, enhance monitoring and early warning systems, and mobilize rescue forces and equipment as needed.
Impact:
Sustained rainfall and winds may result in power outages due to downed power lines and cause infrastructural damage. Further, incessant rainfall is likely to cause temporary waterlogging on important roads, highways, and bridges. Essential transport services may experience schedule disruptions.
Coastal activities may face disruptions and restrictions due to high coastal tides and strong winds. Wind gusts may pose risks of physical injury and potential damage to houses, buildings, power supply and telecom infrastructure, trees, and vehicles.
Recommendations:
Avoid traveling to areas prone to flooding and landslides. If travel is necessary, exercise caution and be prepared for potential road closures or detours. Prepare for possible power outages by arranging for adequate backups and charging all electronic devices. Amid sustained heavy rainfall and severe weather, advised to cater to delays in supply chains and employee commute.
Due diligence should be followed if employee commute is planned to low-lying areas. Local authorities may issue traffic advisories or restrictions depending on the flood situations. Stay updated regarding the same and make travel plans accordingly. Non-essential travel should be avoided mainly in areas where heavy rainfall or flood alerts are active. This could lead to dangerous driving conditions and pose a safety threat. Passengers expected to board flights are advised to connect with respective airlines and remain abreast of the updated schedule before leaving for the airport. It is also advised to account for additional travel time as rainfall induced waterlogging may lead to slow vehicular movement along highways and lead to travel delays.
